About Me
I love maps and their use in navigation games like adventure racing, expedition racing, and orienteering.
Currently, I am a primary navigator for the Dirty Avocados Adventure Racing Team and a member of the Bay Area Adventure Racing Club (BAARBD.org).
I started drawing my own maps as soon as crayons and paper appeared to me circa 1976. Growing up, I played strategy board games with topographic representations of historical events and future unimagined ones. I also, sat around listening intensely to eciting stories my Great Uncle told of his expeditions to places like Antarctica, Peru and Baja California.
In 1991, I discovered the sport called Orienteering and have enjoyed it ever since. It was not until 1999 that I started competing in the ultimate navigation-based team multi-sport challenge, Adventure Racing. I have won a US National Championship Medal in Orienteering and qualified for three USARA National Championships, and my expedition racing experience includes Primal Quest, Baja Travesia, Raid the North Extreme, AdventureXstream and the Alaskan Mountain Wilderness Classic. However, more importantly I have made a lot of lasting friendships and seen the world as few do.
Given how difficult it can be to enter this sport for I have shared my knowledge in my spare time developing and leading adventure racing training programs for new racers entering the sport. I feel you need to have a flexible mind in this sport so I am always looking to learn something new and thus I am looking forward to using TOPO! and the forum here at TOPO! Explorer.
