Points of Interest from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Trails Illustrated Map by National Geographic.
Legend: Points of interest are denoted by their black icons.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the country’s most visited park, with over 9 million visitors per year. Almost all of these visitors, however, never leave pavement, allowing you to find solitude along the 800 miles of maintained hiking and horse trails. The vast elevation difference and ample amount of annual precipitation within the park give visitors a chance to see a variety of flora and fauna not found in one place anywhere in the country. From the east coast’s only temperate rainforest on the valley floors to the sub-alpine environment on the high ridges, a day hike in the smokies is equivalent to a 1,000 mile drive to Canada.
Note: Camping is only allowed at designated sites that are equipped by the park service with bear cables. Shelters along the Appalachian Trail require reservations for non-thru-hikers.
