If you are a CO high country mountain biker looking for a good ride at lower elevation while waiting for the snow to melt, the Red Rocks trail from Matthew Winters Park is a gem. It’s gets pretty crowded on weekends, but it is a great mix of tecnhical, rocky stuff and some nice red dirt downhills and meadows. Add in the views of Denver and the incredible rock formations of the famous amphitheater, and you have one of the great semi-urban rides around.

Dan,

Sounds like you’re getting out there quite a bit. I hit Flying J ranch on the Evergreen/Conifer border this weekend. (off of CO-73) it was pretty sloppy still in some spots. Are you starting to see some of the other trails dry out?

Despite a really cold and wet May up here in Evergreen, the trails are starting to dry out. I rode Alderfer 3 Sisters last Saturday and there was no trace of snow, even at the top of Evergreen Mountain. I’m going to be on the same trails tomorrow, so more to report in a couple of days. I’m figuring that the melt will be significant today and will be totally complete by sometime tomorrow. The good news is that A-Basin is still open for skiing/riding and I’m going to give the Spring slush a go on Sunday. Ahhh, spring in the Rockies, you gotta love it!
