Originally posted this on Backpacking and Hiking, but we added a new forum! We know that a map and compass are essential, but how about those other items that could save your life in a pinch? I think it’s important enough that we should start a new forum topic about it. Another great site on tips for backcountry survival: http://www.gregdavenport.com/survivalcorner.php I’ve met and seen Greg’s presentations on several occasions and have adopted several of his suggestions for my “never leave home without it” pack. |

I have been carrying those instant hand/foot warmers sold at Walmart during cold weather excursions. They work great and may have already saved a few of my toes during a long winter mountain biking trip. I carry them as a first-aid against hypothermia – to be placed in the armpits if showing signs of heat loss. Luckily, I have not had to use them. This was a response from a bad spell of hypothermia that I had while backpacking in Alaska. Follow the link for the story: http://ctxguide.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=92 . |

Take a look at my informational website at http://www.ultralightbackpackingonline.info It isn’t so much about survival as it is about having a safe and enjoyable outdoor experience in the backcountry, avoiding the necessity of rescue. |
Know of an upcoming safety & survial clinic? Planning on heading into the backcountry soon? Take a moment to read up on hypothermia prevention, fire starting aids, or ‘First Aid Kit’ must haves.
