We , my son and I will be traveling the OBCDR this summer. We will travel all of route 5, 4,& 3. We will begin in California, go to Washington and return on routes 3 & 4. The plan is to document the entire trip with GPS tracks and way points of interesting places and photographs. A couple of the places we plan to visit are crack in the ground and Christmas valley dunes. Perhaps if we can find them, some ghost towns. The expedition is expected to take about 3 or 4 weeks. If any one has some suggestions for places we should check out please feel free to post them. If you know of some good fishing spots along the route we would like to know of them also. We are also always looking for sponsors for this and other future expeditions.

Hi Dick,

Sounds like an incredible trip. You might consider applying to become a National Geographic Sponsored Athlete! We’re always looking for people that are going on real world ::expeditions:: that involve mapping. To apply simply contact our Evergreen office 800.962.1643 and ask for Michelle.

Happy Trails!

Thanks Mike, I will do that on Monday. One other thing we will be doing on this expedition will be some Geocaching.
Thanks again for the input.

Hi Dick,
Just did some research on the OBCDR after seeing your post. Being from New Jersey I had no idea what it was , but now I must say I am jealous. What type of vehicle will you and your son be using? Those of us who live in the most densely populated state in the country can only dream of a trip like that. I wish you and your son a great trip and please keep us posted.

Mr.Coz, good to here from you. We will each be driving 1989 Toyota 4×4 xtra cab pickups. Both are 22re ,5 speed with Marlin Crawler dual cases. they have been sased with Marlin 4” lift and 37MTR tires on series 51 wheels. Both have XD 9000I winches , Marlin front and rear bumbers and sliders. This expedition will have a side agenda . We will be documenting as much as we know how and turn the info over to my niece. She is a 5th grade teacher and will use this material as a class project . The kids will be writing articles to submit to magazines. Who knows we may inspire a new writer. There may be a side trip to Ellensburg, Washington. My son competes in RC rock crawling and there is suposed to be comp there to coinside with W.E. Rock. We ar beginning to think about next years adventure and looking for Ideas and sponsors. One thought I have been entertaining is the Nevada Trophy run 2009. But who knows , we still need to complete this one and do our wrap up. Mike are we able to post pictures on this forum?

Hello, Dick, have you or are you doing the OBCDR trip yet? I have info on the routes. My brother and I were planning on doing it soon, I have several sections of the trip already entered in TOPO with routing and waypoints. All I need to do is figure out how to download the waypoints into my Garmin 60CSx. If any of this sound interesting, post a responce and we can get in touch.
A good place to camp when in the lakeview area is the goose lake campground. just south of Lakeview on 395. It is a state campground, very clean with showers. Here is the Lat/Lon. N41 59’ 39.2” W120 19’ 23.9”

We havent started yet, had to work out some issues about care for grandparents. It now looks like everything is in place for August. The amount of day lite and how tired we are will determine when and where we stay the night. It looks like we will have a new Garmin Oregon to help us along. We will be posting pictures as soon as we can.
Thanks for the input.

Jeff, It appears that I need to purchase an upgrade for my topo state (oregon). I have version 3.4.3. Which I have discovered doesn’t support the garmin 60CSx. the gps is to new, or my mapping progam is to old, about 3yrs.

Armyjeeper,

Yes, you need to purchase the upgrade to version 4.2.8, which will give you USB support for your 60CSx unit. Another option would be to purchase the Seattle version of the TOPO! Weekend Explorer product which would give you additional coverage and get you the upgrade for your version 3.x.x Oregon software, cost would be $29.95 vs $19.95 for the straight upgrade.
