It seems most members here are West coasters. Does anyone have any good hikes to post about the south east?

I posted a trip on the map for the Slick Rock Creek Wilderness in North Carolina. The Smokies and surrounding area are some of my favorite mountains in the world!

Hi, I live in Fort Myers Florida which is sorta SE I guess, at least it’s south. I hiked the first section of the Florida National Scenenic trail in February 08. It is southern beginning of the approx. 1400 mile trail that ends up over by Pensacola, FL. The southern trailhead is in the Everglades and is mostly water and mud up to hip deep according to the time of the year, I got in to knee deep water. Well, I’m 78 and hadn’t done any hiking since being in the Marines back in 1948 so I made it for the first 8 miles but it was the most tiring hike for me with a 30 lb backpack, (that I didn’t really need). I was wondering if I would make it before dark but I did, you can average about 1 mph or less in this section. The next section is about 30 miles and requires probably 2 -3 overnight camps. I might try and get back on the trail next winter. This is the official trail associations web site. http://www.floridatrail.org/web/index.php

pogo,

That’s awesome that you hiked the first section of the Florida National Scenic trail. Did you have to take any special precautions for water snakes, alligators, etc.? If you took some pictures I’d love to seem them. Feel free to create a trip file in the desktop application and tell us more about your adventures.

Regards,
John
